Above the gate of Utrecht’s Pandhof, a Roman soldier is cutting his own cloak in half. That single act of kindness helped make Sint Maarten (Martinus of Tours) one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages.
The legend goes that Martinus, riding home on a bitter winter day, passed a poor man sitting in the snow without a coat or shoes. He had no money to give, so he gave half his cloak instead. The sculpture freezes that moment, and the courtyard inside carries on with the rest of the saint’s life story.
On VoiceMap’s Uniquely Utrecht tour, you stop at the gate to hear the full legend before you go in. Then you can judge for yourself whether the cloister looks like a Harry Potter film set, as some say it does.
