The Dom Tower once had a whole cathedral nave beside it. In 1674, a tornado tore through and destroyed most of it. The tower stayed put, and the gap became Domplein, a square that was never meant to be one.
Today the tower rises 112 metres, the highest church tower in the Netherlands. A building rule in Utrecht’s inner city keeps new buildings from growing taller, so it still owns the skyline. Look down and the lost nave’s walls and columns are marked out in the street.
On VoiceMap, one Utrecht tour stops on Domplein to explain the tornado and the height rule. Another ends beneath the tower, with pointers to the guided climb and the Dom Under tour.
