On a clear day, you can see Denmark from the top of Warnemünde's lighthouse. It's a climb of 138 steps.
The lighthouse went into service in 1898 and had a keeper until 1978. During the Cold War, the view across the water meant something else. East Germany could guard its land border, but not the sea. At night, people set off from beaches like these towards Denmark by boat, surfboard and paddle. Some 900 made it.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tour of Warnemünde tells that story on the walk to the lighthouse, then leaves the climb up to you.
