Leeds Kirkgate Market is where Marks and Spencer began. In 1884, Michael Marks opened a penny bazaar here with an admirably simple pricing policy: everything cost a penny. Ten years later he teamed up with Tom Spencer, and British underwear drawers were never the same again. A heritage stall beside the green centenary clock marks the spot.
The market started out in 1822 in the open air. Its 1904 hall, all glass roof and bottle-green steel pillars, was the only part to escape a 1975 fire that did more damage than the wartime bomb that hit the market. During the Second World War, the Ministry of Food also ran Leeds’s rationing from offices here.
VoiceMap’s self-guided audio tours of Leeds follow the city’s restored Victorian arcades and Corn Exchange to these doors, then lead you inside to find the stall where a high-street empire was born.
