Introducing our Swansea tours
“Ugly, lovely town,” Dylan Thomas called it, and Swansea has worn the description with a certain pride ever since. In Welsh it’s Abertawe, the mouth of the Tawe, though in the nineteenth century the world knew it as Copperopolis, the smelting town whose furnaces turned out much of the planet’s copper.
The lovely half rarely announces itself. The Three Nights’ Blitz of 1941 took much of the old centre, and many visitors drive straight on to the beaches of Gower, missing the alleyways that lead to secret spots and the old docks where the world’s first passenger railway service once rattled around the bay.
VoiceMap’s self-guided audio tours know where to look. Walk with a Swansea-born guide from the ruined castle to Dylan’s favourite haunts, past a road that has played New York and Oxford on screen, or follow a ghost in the machine to the Waterfront Museum, where old rails still run through the floor. And when the No Sign Bar calls, just hit pause.
