Shropshıre

Shropshire has long been loved from a distance. A. E. Housman, who grew up gazing west at its “blue remembered hills” from neighbouring Worcestershire, turned the view into A Shropshire Lad, and many travellers still know the county as a soft green blur on the road to Wales.

Up close, it’s a border county with a long memory and a gift for understatement. Ludlow’s Broad Gate was built to keep the Welsh out, yet the town now welcomes all comers to its market stalls and tasting menus, and John Betjeman called it “probably the loveliest town in England” – which, round here, counts as shouting.
