Rovanıemı

Santa Claus has an official address, and it’s here: Rovaniemi, capital of Finnish Lapland, a snowball’s throw from the Arctic Circle. Plenty of visitors make straight for his village, queue for an audience with Joulupukki and fly home with an Arctic Circle postmark to prove it.

But Santa is only the town’s most famous resident. Rovaniemi was burned almost to the ground in 1944, and when Alvar Aalto helped redraw it, he gave the new city a street plan shaped like a pair of reindeer antlers, which says a good deal about what matters this far north.
