Marseille's Scarred Heart: A Tour of Le Panier and Vieux Port
About the Tour
Marseille has spent nearly three thousand years absorbing waves of traders, immigrants, and outcasts, and it shows in every crooked street. On this walking tour, you'll see how the city's port shaped its multicultural identity. You'll also hear how that same history nearly destroyed its oldest neighbourhood.
The tour starts at the Château d'If ferry ticket office on the Quai des Belges, beneath Norman Foster's steel canopy, L'Ombrière. From there you'll follow the Vieux Port, once a Greek trading post founded around 600 BC, past the fish market and the Baroque Hôtel de Ville, before climbing into Le Panier, Marseille's oldest quarter, built across three hills where the ancient city of Massalia once stood.
You'll learn how Le Panier survived Casanova's scandalous memoirs, 1700s lawlessness, and a devastating Nazi demolition in 1943 that levelled 1,500 buildings in three days. Walk up the pretty Rue de Petit Puits and Rue Sainte Françoise, seventeenth-century doorways and wrought-iron balconies still line the narrow lanes. You'll also visit the Vieille Charité, a Baroque poorhouse turned cultural centre, before reaching the striking Cathédrale La Major. Discover the role of Cinema in the perception of modern Marseille and have dramatic views of the modern port as you finish the tour at Fort Saint Jean, a twelfth-century Crusader fortress overlooking the Mediterranean.
On this tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Hear how Marseille backed the wrong side in the Caesar–Pompey conflict and paid for it with a six-month siege
- Learn why the Hôtel de Ville's grand facade faces the harbour rather than its own square
- Discover the 1720 plague that killed half the city's population within two years
- Find out how the Suez Canal's opening in 1869 cut twenty days off the Marseille-Bombay voyage
- See the MUCEM's lattice-wrapped facade, connected to Fort Saint Jean by a striking aerial walkway
- Hear the story of Père Félix Caillol, who rang his church bells in protest against the 1943 destruction
By the time you reach Fort Saint Jean, you'll understand exactly how Marseille's turbulent port history forged its restless, multicultural character.
Tour Producer
Richard Seaward
My name is Richard. I'm British and live in central Aix en Provence, 5 minutes walk from where you start my tour.
I have lived and worked in London, New York and Hong Kong.
After leaving HK and settling in Aix , we took our 3 daughters on a 15 month world back packing trip. Obviously a lot of adventures , but the reason I’m telling you this is , on this trip we took a lot of guided city walks. We found guided walks were the best way to find and get to know the best parts of a city. I also found out what made a good tour and a bad tour, lists of dates when buildings constructed just boring .
So before I started my own tour company Aixwalkingtours.com I spent a long time searching for the interesting Aix story behind the scenes. At the end of your walk you will know how the history of Aix is playing a huge part in what is going on right here and now, you’ll understand and appreciate even more the beautiful city you just walked through. Keep an eye out for me in Aix . I still look like the photo.
