St Paul's Cathedral stands at one of Melbourne's most storied intersections, where Swanston Street meets Flinders Street, facing Federation Square across the road. Consecrated in 1891, this Anglican cathedral was designed in High Victorian Gothic style, its spires rising over the busiest corner in the city like a pointed reproach to all the hurrying trams below.
It has hosted its share of drama. Prime Minister Harold Holt's state funeral was held here in 1968, a peculiarly Melbourne story: Holt had vanished while swimming near Portsea the previous December, never to be found. His body was never recovered. The city, in its inimitable way, later named a swimming centre after him.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours use the cathedral to anchor Melbourne's civic heart, tracing the triangle formed by St Paul's, the Young and Jackson pub, and Flinders Street Station, and explaining how these three buildings together defined the character of old Melbourne.
